2 elderly McHenry residents killed in Wisconsin highway crash

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Two elderly McHenry residents were killed Wednesday afternoon in a rollover crash in west-central Wisconsin.

Delores Freund, 80, and Paul Freund, 85, both of McHenry, were discovered in a 2014 Dodge Van/SUV about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Wisconsin Highway 27 near Eau Claire, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Delores Freund, the driver, died at the scene. Paul Freund was conscious and taken by helicopter to Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire, where he later died from injuries, the release said.

Preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle was heading north on Highway 27 when, for unknown reasons, it entered the southbound lane and continued on a path into the west ditch, where it struck a culvert and concrete wall, according to the release.

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, Cadott Fire and Ambulance and Cadott Police Department assisted at the scene, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation.
