Letter: Use tax money to support stable families, education

To the Editor:

Good writing skills are essential now more than ever, as we tend to communicate in written form rather than verbally. Clear and concise writing is important in every aspect of our lives. But how does one get the skills? This is how it happened for me.

My parents, who read to me each night, taught me the love of reading. A typical 1960s family, my mother, although college-educated, stayed home for a few years, while my father, who ran his own service business, managed – barely – to make enough to pay the bills. That meant someone was always home and could read to us and help with homework.

Much has changed since then. Few families have the luxury of having only one parent working. Many have to work several jobs just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. What’s different? Partially the CEO to worker salary ratio, which was 20 to 1 in 1965, is now around 300 to 1. I hear complaints about the “redistribution of wealth,” but the economy does not improve when the 1 percent put money in the bank. It improves when working class people spend it on goods and services.

We need to spend our tax money wisely, to support education and programs that promote stable families and prepare our workforce for the careers of the future. Maybe then we can go back to having parents at home to help their children learn to love to read, become well-educated and good writers.
