Becky Anderson Wilkins, a member of the Naperville City Council, has announced that she will seek the Democratic nomination for Illinois’ 6th Congressional District in the upcoming March primary election.

If she wins the primary, she likely will face Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, in the November 2018 general election.

Anderson Wilkins also is co-owner of Anderson’s Bookshops, which has locations in Downers Grove, Naperville and LaGrange.

“Running the family business has given me a lot of perspective on how Congress should work,” she said in a video announcing her campaign. “And it isn’t about a fancy office or perks. It’s about putting people to work, respecting women and their choices, welcoming, well, everyone, and knowing that climate change isn’t a hoax.”

In the video, she also says, “You have to know a bad idea when you see one,” as she lifts up a book featuring President Donald Trump on the cover.

Anderson Wilkins is one of several candidates who have announced their intent to run for the Democratic nomination. Others include Carole Cheney, former district chief of staff to Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville; College of Lake County Trustee Amanda Howland, who lost to Roskam in the November 2016 general election; Lake Zurich resident Geoffrey Petzel; Chicago resident Austin Songer; and Jennifer Zordani, a regulatory attorney and Clarendon Hills resident.

Roskam first was elected to Congress in 2006.
