Developers hope to demolish part of Huntley Outlet Center by October

HUNTLEY – Wrecking balls and bulldozers will hit the Huntley Outlet Center soon.

Developers hope to have a portion of the 270,000-square-foot outlet center demolished by Oct. 1, according to a permit recently submitted to the village of Huntley.

Demolition will start on the 8 acres on the west side of the property that General RV Center bought to expand its business, which sits adjacent to the former outlet center, said Capital Companies LLC President Rich Turasky, a Lake in the Hills resident.

The rest of the building will be demolished once the property is rezoned, he said.

Turasky and other property owners have said they hope to turn the rest of the space at Interstate 90 and Route 47 into an office and research industrial district.

The village is continuing to work on a redevelopment agreement for the property with the owners, Village Manager Dave Johnson said. An incomplete rezoning application was submitted to the village at the beginning of August, and it was sent back to developers last week.

The center opened in August 1994, and at its heyday, it housed more than 40 stores. Banana Republic Factory Store – the last retailer to shut its doors at the center – closed April 29.

“The outlet mall and retail business has drastically changed because of the internet and how people are buying their retail products,” Turasky said.

Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group sold the mall in April 2016, when it was less than half-full with businesses.

Huntley Investment Partners LLC – a group made up of California-based Craig Realty Group, Chicago’s Prime Group Inc. and Elgin’s Capital Realty and Development – bought the property.

Representatives from General RV could not be reached Friday for comment.
