“I came in pretty confident,” Winter said. “The front is definitely easier than the back. I knew I had to just relax and enjoy the game.”
Winter (above) started her day with a 9-over 45 on the back nine and came in with a 7-over 43 on the front. It was her first time playing the course competitively, but she was able to play a practice round over the weekend to prepare with her teammates.
Johnsburg finished seventh out of 12 teams with a 398 total, 17 strokes behind third-place East Dubuque. Ceara Mulvery (101), Gracie Berthoud (103) and Ellie Johnson 106 made up the other counting scores for the Skyhawks.
“It would have been nice to have the team go being my senior year,” Winter said, “but to go down and have the support from the team means a lot.” Richmond-Burton finished ninth with 421 strokes. Lauryn Davis (above) finished three strokes out of the final individual qualifying spot with a 94. Darci Rutherford rebounded nicely by following a 59 on the back nine with a 45 on the front. Jennifer Horner carded a 111, and Megan Klode shot a 112.
Harvard’s trio of Joelle McMillan, Jennah Brookner and Emma Ackland was not able to crack the top 10 as individual qualifiers. McMillan shot 104, with Brookner a stroke behind at 105. Ackland fired a 115.
The Marengo duo of Carlie Seemann and Adrianna Georgiades had trouble’t with the fast greens and long fairways at PrairieView. Seemann started with a 62 on the back, but shot 53 on the front for 115. Georgiades shot a 153. “The practice putting greens were fast, so I knew the actual greens were fast,” said Seemann, above. “But they were hard to read sometimes.”

BYRON – A seasoned veteran such as Lauren Winter has played enough golf in her life to know how to navigate her way through a sectional tournament.
The Johnsburg senior proved she could handle the heat in the Class 1A Stillman Valley Sectional at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron. Winter fired a 16-over-par 88 and will make her second state appearance Friday at Red Tail Run in Decatur. This time, it will be as an individual.
