Island Lake man gets 12 years in prison for 2014 McHenry DUI crash

Crash seriously injured 2 teenagers

McHENRY – A 49-year-old Island Lake man will spend 12 years in prison for a 2014 drunken driving crash that seriously injured two teenagers.

Michael E. Smith pleaded guilty Dec. 4 to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a revoked license.

On Nov. 2, 2014, Smith went to the Twisted Moose Bar in McHenry, where he drank 10 beers and took 10 shots of liquor, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Smith left the bar and drove his Ford Ranger in the wrong lane of traffic on River Road near McHenry and collided with a Dodge Neon that was carrying four teenage passengers. Two of the teenagers were seriously injured as a result of the crash, the release said.

Police later learned that Smith’s blood-alcohol level was 0.225 the night of the crash. His license also had been revoked, and Smith had three prior violations for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the release.

On Friday, Smith was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

His attorney, Dan Hofmann, could not be reached for comment.

The case was investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs and Judy Shammo.
