WOODSTOCK – Jacobs co-op's Elijah Stuart watched the past three seasons as Cary-Grove co-op swimmers jumped wildly and cannonballed into Woodstock North's pool to celebrate their Fox Valley Conference Invitational championships.
On Saturday, the Hampshire senior and his teammates were the ones performing celebratory jumps into the pool as Jacobs ended C-G co-op's streak of 10 consecutive conference titles.
Jacobs co-op, made up of swimmers from Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown, won the five-team meet with 327 points. C-G co-op placed second with 318 points, followed by Huntley (170), McHenry (159) and Woodstock North co-op (142).
Jacobs won six of 11 events to claim the title. Stuart, a senior at Hampshire, and junior Harold Ogaban (Hampshire) each won two individual events and also were a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:38.83), along with junior Alex Le (Jacobs) and junior Eric Boysen (Jacobs).
Stuart and Ogaban shared the FVC Most Valuable Swimmer award with Woodstock North co-op's Quinn Cynor, who won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, going faster than the state qualifying time twice.
"In the beginning of the year we knew we had a strong team," said Stuart, who won the 50 free (22.01) and 100 free (48.42). "We wanted to beat C-G. That was the plan the whole year. Actually doing it is amazing ... the best senior gift ever."
"It means the world to me," said Ogaban, who won the 200 free (1:47.89) and 100 backstroke (53.98). "C-G is such a great team. There's a reason they won 10 in a row, but we're glad the streak is over."
Freshman Vince Chiappetta (Jacobs) won the 500 free (4:56.22) by almost 10 seconds. Cole Seeger (C-G) was runner-up in 5:05.89.
"I just felt it today," Chiappetta said. "It's pretty cool. I was a couple of seconds off my best time in the club season. When I started to pass Cole, I turned up the gas a little more and kept increasing my lead."
Cynor, a Woodstock freshman, earned Most Valuable Swimmer and Newcomer of the Year. He won the 200 IM (1:57.75) and 100 butterfly (51.79). Woodstock North co-op coach Ian Shanahan called Cynor "a monster."
"All I'm thinking about now is preparing for sectionals," said Cynor, whose 100 butterfly time set a school record. "Hopefully, I can do it next week. Those times are awfully fast for today. It's going to be exciting [at sectionals]."
Prairie Ridge freshman Hunter Jackson won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.16), and C-G co-op's Omid Babakhani (Crystal Lake Central), Cameron Castro (South), Connor Dolezal (C-G) and Kolin Fadden (C-G) won the 200 free relay (1:29.16), and set a meet record in the 400 free relay (3:15.85).
"It's one of those things you can't take for granted," C-G co-op coach Scott Lattyak said. "[Jacobs co-op] was a rising favorite this year, and we saw that in our dual meet. Honestly, from this point forward we are just focused on sectionals. What's cool is we'll see [Jacobs co-op] at our sectionals, and they won't be our competition. We want to see them move on to state, as well."
