Plainfield's Melissa McCarthy shows love to, lampoons her hometown on 'The Late Show'

Actress appeared on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ last week

Comedian and Plainfield native Melissa McCarthy made an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last week to promote her new comedy film, “Life of the Party.”

During her stop, McCarthy and Colbert lampooned Plainfield and the greater Will County area as part of Colbert’s reoccurring “Community Calendar” segment.

After teasing Plainfield for the numerous businesses, Victorian-themed events and ribbon-cuttings, Colbert hoped to see a ribbon-cutting for “Plainfield’s desperately needed Ribbon and Giant Scissor Factory.”

Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins’ Coffee with the Mayor was the butt of the two comedians’ jokes, with McCarthy hoping the monthly meeting would “go smoother than ‘Tequila Shots with the Sanitation Department.’ ”

Collins said he had no comment on the comedian’s schtick.

Minooka native Nick Offerman also made an appearance on “The Late Show” in 2016 to ask, “What’s happening with the repairs from last June’s hailstorm?”

McCarthy’s appearance was the second time within a week she mocked her hometown.

McCarthy appeared on Marc Maron’s “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast and spoke about her Catholic upbringing and being pulled over in a station wagon “full of drunk 16-year-olds.”

“The cops pulled us over, did the light thing and talked to the driver, who was sober,” McCarthy said. “He went back and looked in the back seat, and there’s seven girls rattling around with, like, 800 beers, and just said, ‘Have a good night.’ ”

McCarthy, whose parents still live in Plainfield, graduated from Joliet Catholic Academy, known then as St. Francis Academy, in 1988.
