Get ready for Thursday's McHenry County MVA Awards

The Northwest Herald Most Valuable Athlete Night will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at McHenry County College’s Luecht Conference Center.

This is the third year for the event, which recognizes Athlete of the Year winners for their respective sports, Buffalo Wild Wings Athletes of the Month winners and a Lifetime Achievement honoree. There are also awards for Underclassman of the Year, Team of the Year and Coach of the Year.

The night will culminate with the announcement of of the Northwest Herald Female and Male Athlete of the Year winners. Dr. Steven Rochell, of OrthoIllinois, will donate $2,500 to the each winners’ school to be used for athletics.

While fall and winter sports’ Athlete of the Year winners have been selected, those in spring sports will be revealed on Thursday. Three finalists are invited from each of the six spring sports, as well as three finalists for Female and Male Athlete of the Year.

Here are the three finalists invited for the spring sports:

Baseball: Brandon Bannon (Richmond-Burton), Dylan Honkala (McHenry) and Ryan Ignoffo (Cary-Grove).

Softball: Tiffany Giese (Huntley), Hannah Ritter (Marengo) and Sydney Ruggles (Dundee-Crown).

Girls soccer: Jena Berkland (Prairie Ridge), Taylor Prerost (Woodstock North) and Kelly Stayart (Cary-Grove).

Boys tennis: Kerwin Chong (Jacobs), Daniel Lamar and Patrick Nasta (Prairie Ridge) and Julian Collins and Jack Soderwall (Huntley).

Girls track and field: Tabor Gleason (Cary-Grove), Jenna Pauly (McHenry) and Natasha Schaffer (Prairie Ridge).

Boys track and field: Brian Keyes (McHenry), Maki Mohr (McHenry) and Finn Schirmer (Marengo).

The nominees for Team of the Year are Crystal Lake Central volleyball, Huntley wrestling and Prairie Ridge football.

The nominees for Coach of the Year are Lisa Brunstrum (Crystal Lake Central volleyball), Chris Schremp (Prairie Ridge football) and David Silva (Marian Central wrestling).

The nominees for Underclassman of the Year (freshman or sophomore) are Dylan Connell (Marian Central wrestling), Chelsea Gale (Prairie Ridge cross country and soccer) and Schirmer (Marengo football and track and field).

The Female Athlete of the Year nominees are Liz Alsot (McHenry volleyball and basketball), Hannah Ritter (Marengo volleyball, basketball and softball) and Valerie Tarazi (Prairie Ridge swimming and track and field).

The Male Athlete of the Year nominees are Samson Evans (Prairie Ridge football), Mohr (McHenry cross country, basketball and track and field) and Eric Mooney (Huntley football and track and field).

This year’s Lifetime Achievement recipient will be retiring Crystal Lake South tennis coach Don Nead, who has been coaching for 50 years.
