A Woodstock man died in a fiery car crash early Tuesday in Woodstock, a fire official said.
Woodstock police and the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded to a crash at 3 a.m. Tuesday near Routes 14 and 47.
The single-vehicle crash occurred when a car crashed head-on into a traffic light pole at Lake Street and Route 14. The driver had been heading west on Route 14 when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed, McHenry County Coroner Anne Majewski said.
The car started on fire, and the driver was trapped in the vehicle, Woodstock Fire Department Captain Karen Bush said.
“The police department had arrived on scene before we did, and we were trying to extricate the person from the car,” she said. “We were unable to get the person out.”
Benjie J. Tafolla, 26, of Woodstock, died on the scene at 3:13 a.m, suffering blunt trauma to the head, Majewski said.
The fire department extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, Bush said.
The incident remains under investigation by the police and the McHenry County Coroner’s office, Bush said.
Lanes have fully opened near Route 14 and Lake Avenue in Woodstock after being closed for more than 10 hours.
The Woodstock Police Department didn’t return calls requesting comment on the incident.
