Letter: Why the outrage about Algonquin Township now?

To the Editor:

I am really at a loss to understand the Northwest Herald's war on Algonquin Township's new Highway Commissioner Andrew Gasser. In the 50 years preceding Gasser's taking the position, there were no complaints of plow damage not being taken care of in at timely manner?

I have been a subscriber for a long time so please help me out and reprint any articles I may have missed.

I have been a resident of McHenry County for over 20 years and a subscriber to the Northwest Herald nearly all of those years. I don't recall ever reading any hard-hitting investigative scrutiny in your newspaper as to the Miller family and their fifty year dynasty at the Algonquin Township Highway Department.

It wasn't until Mr. Gasser ran for office that I learned of the amazing compensation package for Bob Miller, his wife and two sons in law. If term limits would be good for state legislators, what about counties, townships and municipalities?

Andy Gasser may have been naive in thinking he could just fire union employees (even ones with no tenure) in the state of Illinois.

At this point, I suppose we could have a recall election in an attempt to get the Millers back in power. The only problem is if that were to be successful, we'd then be faced with the dilemma of which son in law would run the department for the next 25 years.

The Millers might be forced to draw straws at their kitchen table.
