Letter: Don't want to pay for rec center

To the Editor:

On June 5, I read a story titled “Referendum OK’d for Rec Center upgrades.”

There are many senior citizens in McHenry. Where do you think we can come up with an extra $180 to pay with our real estate taxes?

I’m 79 years old and still have to work a couple days a week to pay my taxes on my house now. I only have a 900-square-foot home. I’m also alone.

Why should seniors have to do without necessities so others don’t have to travel to Woodstock to swim? Isn’t it enough we have to pay for your child’s education? We pay and pay and get nothing in return.

$180 is a big amount to pay so your children and young people can have fun. The people who use or want an additional rec center should pay for it. Raise the price for those who use it.
