To the editor:
The proposal to consolidate the McHenry Township Road District with the township board has nothing to do with costs. It is about oversight and the elimination of the one-man rule highway commissioner.
The discussion about a cost-benefit study is simply a distraction from the real issue which is transparency and oversight. The referendum is not being put forth to reduce costs but rather to bring about some democratic protocols to the operation of the township roads.
There is no board or body of elected officials who direct and decide the road district issues, but instead a single individual who operates with no supervision or oversight.
The babble that you will continue to hear about a cost benefit study will be an indication that those who want to maintain the present system cannot come up with an acceptable argument to keep the one-person rule operation going and that they don’t want to talk about it.
The reason that they can’t come up with a logical argument to maintain the present system is because there isn’t one.
Vote yes in McHenry Township in November.
