A man and woman appeared in McHenry County court Wednesday on child endangerment charges after police said they left two children unsupervised in a home the city later deemed “uninhabitable.”

Nicole A. Vaxmonsky and Michael J. Picard remained at the McHenry County Jail on Wednesday evening on $1,500 bonds.

Criminal complaints state that 28-year-old Vaxmonsky was “heavily intoxicated” Sunday when she left the house, where the children were asleep.

A passer-by saw Vaxmonsky lying on the side of the road not far from her home in the 2000 block of Central Street, McHenry, and called the police, McHenry Deputy Chief Thomas Walsh said.

Vaxmonsky was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry “due to her level of intoxication,” according to the criminal complaint.

When officers learned Vaxmonsky had two children younger than
10 years old, they went to her home for a well-being check. They found Picard, 29, lying in vomit, and he was taken to the hospital, Walsh said.

Both children were unharmed. Police reported the situation to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, and the children temporarily were placed with a relative, Walsh said.

City code enforcement authorities said no one can live in the home until repairs are made. The house was reported to have mold in multiple rooms and at least one room where the ceiling had collapsed, according to the complaint.

Neither Vaxmonsky’s nor Picard’s public defenders were available to comment Wednesday.

Both Vaxmonsky and Picard are due in court July 27.
