McHenry sets dates for fall brush pickup, e-waste removal, hydrant flushing

Residents must have fall brush out by 7 a.m. Oct. 1

The city of McHenry has announced dates for its fall brush pickup, fall hydrant flushing program and e-waste collection.

Fall brush pickup

The fall brush pickup program will begin Oct.1 for the entire city. All residents must have their brush out by 7 a.m. that day.

Crews will visit each street once and continue until they have gone through the entire city.

This program is for tree material only – yard waste belongs in the yard waste collection program provided by the city of McHenry’s waste hauler.

When placing branches at the curb, make sure they are not in the street and that all branches are as long as possible and no more than 5 inches in diameter. Residents are advised to place their brush on the parkway parallel to the street no later than 7 a.m. Oct. 1.

This program is intended for larger tree branches resulting from trimming or storm damage. No stumps or roots will be taken. The program is for residential properties only.

Hydrant flushing

The fall hydrant flushing operation throughout the city will begin Monday for a two-week period ending Sept. 28. Should a delay arise, the flushing operation will be completed the week of Oct. 1.

Hydrant flushing is necessary to clean and maintain the water distribution system. During the flushing period, water can become discolored. If this occurs, run cold water for a few minutes until the water clears.

If this does not correct the problem, wait about an hour and try again. Do not run hot water until the cold water has cleared.

This discoloration is not hazardous to human consumption; however, clothing can become stained during laundering.

E-waste removal

Prairieland Disposal will remove e-waste at the curb on McHenry residents’ regular trash pickup day beginning Sept. 24 and ending Sept. 28. Residents are limited to five electronic items a pickup.

Out of those five items, only one may be a TV or computer monitor.

Call Prairieland Disposal at 847-381-9300 with questions. A complete list of electronics that are banned from landfills is available online from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency website at www.epa.illinois.gov.

Questions on these programs can be directed to the Public Works Department at 815-363-2186.
