Letter: Things to consider with Roskam

To the Editor:

In response to your recent coverage of U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam’s appearance before your editorial board, it’s important to state some facts that demonstrate that while pretending to be a “moderate,” Roskam’s votes do not represent the sensibilities of the 6th Congressional District. Just last year, he voted to:

1. Allow veterans deemed mentally incompetent to retain firearms (3/16, House Resolution 1181)

2. Limit the combined total of property and state taxes that we can deduct from our federal income taxes to $10,000 (12/19, HR 1)

3. Eliminate coverage for pre-existing conditions while classifying pregnancy, and sexual assault as “pre-existing conditions” (5/4, HR 1628)

4. Allow internet providers to start selling our data (3/28, Senate Joint Resolution 34)

5. Make it legal for hunters to kill hibernating bears and wolves while they’re sleeping (2/16, House Joint Resolution 69)

As you consider which candidate to endorse for the coming election, I hope that you will take a look at the list of facts above and ask yourself if these are the actions you feel best represent the sensibilities of your readers who live in the 6th District. As a resident of our area for more than 40 years, I’m pretty sure that the answer is going to be a firm no.
