A 58-year-old man made a court appearance Tuesday on charges accusing him of sexually assaulting two girls for several years.
Robert J. Ballarini, of the
600 block of Nantucket Way, Island Lake, was arrested Thursday on multiple charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, jail records show.
The Class X felony typically is punishable by as many as
30 years in prison.
Ballarini is accused of raping and sexually assaulting children younger than 13 years old.
The assaults are believed to have taken place between May 20, 2012, and May 19, 2016, and
April 23, 2012, and Aug. 4, 2018, according to a six-count criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.
It was not clear Tuesday how Ballarini might have known the alleged victims, police said.
The children disclosed the abuse to a family member, who then took the information to the Island Lake Police Department in July, Interim Police Chief Dan Palmer said.
McHenry County Judge Joel Berg appointed the public defender’s office to represent Ballarini on Friday.
He remained at the McHenry County Jail on Tuesday evening on a $250,000 bond. He would need to post $25,000 bail to be released.
Ballarini was sentenced Sept. 7 to one year of court supervision in connection with a separate case that accused him of violating an order of protection.
It is unclear how the most recent charges might affect that sentence.
Ballarini’s next court date is scheduled for Oct. 23.
