To the Editor:
There has been a long-standing debate regarding abortion in our country. I’m here to say that I think that we should make abortion illegal, but give abortion only to people who have been affiliated with rape or incest or have a major health concern.
There are simply other methods outside of abortion. Abortion should be a last resort for all women. American Adoptions lists off plans for unplanned births. Many of the list’s contents include placing the baby in temporary guardianship, placing the baby with another family member or putting it up for adoption. There are plenty of options instead of killing off someone’s life.
Also, for most cases, people need to be more responsible for their actions when having sex. Before you mention rape or incest, the “abortions due to rape and incest account for less than 1 percent of all abortions in the United States” (Human Coalition). For other cases, “there were approximately 746,500 teen pregnancies involving young women and girls under age 20. The bulk of those pregnancies – 733,000 – were among teens age 15 to 19, while girls 14 and younger accounted for 13,500 pregnancies” (Ramah's Voice). It shows a lot of irresponsibility on how many Americans handle sex.
Just have protection, or better yet, just wait. That way, no baby, no abortion, no death. Therefore, we should make abortion illegal, but give abortion to only people who have been affiliated with rape or incest or have a major medical concern.
