Letter: The least we can do

To the Editor:

So, I went to a presentation last night at MCHS East Campus to learn about the proposed bond measure to finance the rehabilitation of both East and West Campus schools. My takeaway is that the school board has given this a lot of thought and has found the best alternative to deal with the district’s problems.

Therefore, I plan to vote yes.

I graduated from East Campus some 50 years ago, part of the class of ‘68. I think we owe the current generation of high schoolers the opportunity to receive a good education, not just because everyone deserves a good education, but also because of the burden we are passing down to them.

Fifty years ago, Illinois was the economic engine of the Midwest. Now, it is more of a zombie state. Our state’s finances are so bad, they can’t be fixed. The inevitable collapse will be the burden of the next generation.

Fifty years ago, in Washington, our Senators and Representatives actually represented us, the voters. Now, thanks to our current campaign finance laws and the use of gerrymandering, these so-called representatives actually represent themselves and their donors.

That, plus the trillions of dollars in National Debt we are passing down, isn’t much of a graduation present.

Add to that the consequences of global warming, another burden passed on from our generation to the next, due to our own shortsightedness. And, before you blame the politicians for all our problems, remember who it was that voted them into office.

So, I think we owe these young people a chance for a good education. You might even say “it’s the least we can do.” And, if you think about it, doing the least we can do is sort of our legacy.
