Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 announced three recipients of the 2018 Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel awards.
All were honored, along with other Those Who Excel winners from across the state, during the 44th annual recognition dinner Saturday.
ISBE announced 214 statewide recipients of the 2018-19 Those Who Excel awards. Those Who Excel celebrates outstanding classroom teachers, educational leaders and support personnel and their invaluable contributions to schools and communities.
The program honors individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to Illinois public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.
Those Who Excel winners from District 47 were Maureen Biermeier, a special education teacher at Glacier Ridge Elementary School, and Mary Lichtenberger, a first-grade teacher at Glacier Ridge.
Biermeier and Lichtenberger won an award of excellence in the Team category. In the past several years, the two educators have worked together to form an integrated team to meet the needs of all students.
Together, they have found innovative and effective ways to unite general education students with those with special needs, expanding the social-emotional growth of all students and exemplifying the district’s new mission of “empowering all students.”
Ryan Farrell won an award of excellence in the School Board Member category.
Farrell has served on the District 47 board since 2011. A practicing attorney with a degree in accountancy, Farrell has made significant contributions to the district through his service on the Finance Committee.
A Crystal Lake native and father of two sons, Farrell has played a leadership role and been actively involved in many community organizations, including Leadership Greater McHenry County, the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers, Crystal Lake Food Pantry and the Raue Center for the Arts.
Additionally, Farrell recently was elected to the board of directors at Home State Bank.
