To the Editor:
'Tis the season for giving and what better gift than enriching the life of a child? Well, here is your chance to do so.
Three years ago, my 20-year-old son fell asleep behind the wheel while running errands for the boy scout camp he worked for. He was my only child and to get through that first Christmas without him, I created a fundraiser called Stuff the Stocking for Zach. We raised enough money to send his local boy scout troop zip lining and indoor skydiving.
Seeing the smiles on their faces was truly heartwarming and helped make the dark days a little brighter. The next two years, we distributed over 1,300 nature-related children's books and 170 backpacks with binoculars and field guides in hopes of getting children interested in bird watching, one of Zach's greatest passions. This year, my goal is to send every fourth grade student in District 200 on a field trip to the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford. This will impact 425 kids, but to make this happen we need to raise almost $9,000!.
This year's fundraiser is also being held in memory of a dear friend, Jim Baker, longtime owner of Napoli Pizza, who died unexpectedly in October. Jim was a generous soul who gave extensively to our local schools and community.
Tax deductible donations may be sent to Woodstock District 200, c/o Diane Brokaw, 8912 IL Route 120, Woodstock, IL 60098. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and will be accepted through Jan. 10. In honor of Zach and Jim, please help make this the most successful Stuff the Stocking yet.
