Prosecutors file additional charges in connection with Cary overdose death

McHenry County prosecutors have filed additional charges against two people in connection with the distribution of Xanax that killed a 19-year-old woman.

Reanna Salas, 19, was handcuffed in court Monday after a judge explained the potential consequences of a drug-induced homicide conviction.

Police previously charged Salas, of Cary, and 22-year-old Jacob Reis of McHenry with possession of a controlled substance in connection with the death of 19-year-old Rachel Ramirez. Prosecutors continued to investigate the matter, and they filed Class X drug-induced homicide charges against the pair Thursday, records show. Drug-induced homicide typically carries a six- to 30-year prison penalty.

The charges come after police responded to an incident May 14 in the 300 block of Alma Terrace, Cary, after a report of an unresponsive woman, according to a police report. When officers arrived, they found Ramirez on a bedroom floor. Witnesses told investigators that Ramirez and Reis had been together at the home the previous night.

A police search of Reis’ phone revealed a Facebook messenger conversation in which he and Salas arranged a drug delivery, prosecutors wrote in a July 31 motion.

McHenry County Judge James Cowlin agreed to free Reis temporarily on a nonmonetary bond Friday to receive substance abuse treatment.

Reis’ attorney, Assistant Public Defender Eric Vogel, has declined to comment on the case.

Vogel is expected to provide an update on Reis’ progress Dec. 19.

Salas remained at the McHenry County Jail on Monday afternoon. She is scheduled for a bond hearing Dec. 12. Her attorney, Jeffrey Altman, could not be reached for comment Monday.
