Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 says people tried to lure student into van

Police investigate report, find no immediate danger

Crystal Lake police said they will have an increased police presence around an elementary school after an incident that occurred Wednesday.

In an email sent to parents Wednesday, North Elementary School Principal Christina Moran said “an older model maroon van approached a student walking to North, and people in the van were encouraging the student to get into the van in order to get a ride to school.”

Moran said the student declined the invitations, and the van reportedly turned down a street and left the area. The Crystal Lake Police Department was contacted, and a report was filed.

“We want to remind you of the importance of discussing ‘stranger danger’ with your child(ren). Please practice appropriate decision-making in situations like these with your child, and remind them that they should never leave somewhere or get into a vehicle with someone that they do not know,” Moran wrote.

On Thursday morning, Moran sent an update to parents that said after an investigation, police “have confirmed there are no concerns regarding the suspicious vehicle that was reported yesterday, and the incident has been resolved.”

Crystal Lake Police Patrol Cmdr. Scott Miller confirmed that the department investigated the incident. He said the area will have an increased police presence to help ensure student safety.

North Elementary, 500 W. Woodstock St., is part of Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47.

The school is home to about 670 kindergarten through fifth-grade students, according to the school’s website.
