Letter: Time for a new, nonpartisan system for drawing legislative maps

To the Editor:

This past election, a whopping 74 out of 157 state legislator races were uncontested, which means many Illinois voters didn’t even have a choice about who their legislators would be.

Why? The answer is simple – gerrymandered maps created by politicians wanting their party to control as many legislative districts as possible.

Under Illinois’ current system, the party in power has ultimate authority to redraw legislative maps. This often results in legislators picking their voters instead of giving the people the power to pick their legislators.

In an effort to give that power back to the people, we signed onto Senate Joint Resolution-Constitutional Amendment 4, which is a bipartisan proposal that would give voters the opportunity to amend the Constitution next election to create a new, nonpartisan system for drawing legislative maps.

SJR-CA 4 would give voters the choice to establish an independent redistricting commission, increase transparency in the process and provide for public hearings to allow Illinois residents to weigh in.

After decades of unrepresentative district mapping and uncompetitive elections, it is time to remove politics from the process and empower the people of Illinois to actively participate.

We are giving our constituents the opportunity to voice their support for getting a fair maps amendment on the ballot by filling out our petition found on our individual legislative websites: SenatorMcConchie.com, SenatorDeWitte.com and SenatorOberweis.com.

It’s time for real change in Illinois. Allowing our voters to decide on this issue is long overdue.

State Sen. Dan McConchie, 26th District

State Sen. Donald P. DeWitte, 33rd District

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, 25th District
