BLOOMINGTON – Marian Central wrestling will take home its first-ever trophy at the IHSA dual team state tournament Saturday night.
The Hurricanes defeated Chatham Glenwood, 49-18, Saturday morning in the Class 2A state quarterfinals. They advance to face Coal City in the state semifinals at 2 p.m. at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
The top four teams in each class take home a trophy. So win or lose in the semifinals, Marian will bring some hardware back to Woodstock. The Hurricanes had never reached the dual team state quarterfinals until last season, when they lost a quarterfinal match and went home empty-handed.
In their return to dual team state, the Hurricanes took care of business in their opening meet.
Against Chatham Glenwood, Marian received pins from Lou Gaddy (182), Elon Rodriguez (113), Bryce Shelton (138), Hugh Holian (145) and Kaden Randazzo (152). Dylan Connell (160) and Josh Glover (106) won by technical fall. Scotty Burke (126) won by major decision. Wins by decision came from Thor Paglialong (285) and Joey Fitzgerald (170).
Despite losses, Cade Bokowy (195) and Mason Schwalbach (220) avoided pins against Glenwood’s two state medalists, Mitch Hutmacher (195) and Conner Miller (220), respectively.
Marian is ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A by both Illinois Matmen and the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association. Its semifinal opponent, Coal City is ranked No. 2. Three-time defending state champion Washington, ranked No. 1 again, is lurking on the opposite side of the bracket.
Coal City defeated Niles Notre Dame, 45-20, in their quarterfinal Saturday morning.
Win or lose in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal, the Hurricanes will wrestle at 6 p.m. Saturday in either the state championship meet or the third-place meet.
