Coroner releases cause of death for Wauconda boy found in Bangs Lake

The Lake County Coroner has released the cause of death for a Wauconda boy whose body was recovered in Bangs Lake.

Geraldo Rodriguez, 9, died of drowning, Coroner Howard Cooper said in a news release Tuesday. His autopsy was performed Monday. The coroner’s office and Wauconda police continue to investigate his death, according to the release.

Officials said Rodriguez and an 11-year-old boy were on a paddle boat about 7:20 p.m. Friday on Bangs Lake in Wauconda when the two panicked because of strong winds and rough waters. The boys jumped into the late to swim back to shore. Fishermen pulled the 11-year-old out of the water, but couldn’t initially locate Rodriguez.

His body was found about noon Saturday in the deepest part of the lake, officials said.
