To the Editor:
Kudos to McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks and the county's Finance and Audit Committee for rejecting the McHenry County Conservation District's budget. I find it appalling that the appointed trustees for MCCD have the gall to increase the tax levy when the county as a whole is decreasing its levy.
I enjoy visiting many of the MCCD sites and believe the open space provides a premium level value for those of us who call McHenry County home. But raising our taxes in this climate of being overtaxed from every angle is simply irresponsible. I don't claim to know the complete job description for the director, but I have to believe that the county can find a responsible steward for our open spaces for less than $200,000 a year!
How do we as residents effect change in this matter? Contact your County Board member and tell him or her that you support a referendum to allow the MCCD trustees to be elected. Accountability begins at the ballot box!
