Letter: Keep restoring public lands

To the Editor:

This spring, flood waters flowed from property to property, creating its course of erosion, flooded farm fields, home damage and structural damage to roads and other public improvements.

Projections are that seasonal flooding in McHenry County will become more frequent and damaging, with substantial economic costs over time. The excess flow of water from one property to another and the effect this flow has from one property to another, uniquely joins individual property owners as neighbors connected by flood management issues.

As a neighbor, The McHenry County Conservation District plays a vital role in flood management for McHenry County. Through its preservation and restoration of strategic land parcels, the benefits of reducing potential flood damage extend not only to its immediate neighbors but to properties far beyond its boundaries. These initiatives are essentially value added as they are preventative in nature.

The disproportionate costs of repairing and rebuilding after the destruction has occurred are excessive in comparison. Within the scope of good public governance with respect to flood management, increased investment in preventative initiatives, including increased investment and support for the restoration of public lands is forward-looking, effective and economically efficient.
