Huntley High School student threatened to bring bombs to school, police say

Area in Lake in the Hills evacuated while authorities searched teen’s home

A bomb threat from a 15-year-old Huntley High School student led to a search of the teenager’s belongings and his Lake in the Hills home Thursday afternoon, police said.

Huntley police were made aware about noon Thursday of a 15-year-old student who said that he had made bombs at home and wanted to bring them to school, according to a news release from Huntley police.

The student indicated that he made the comment but did not intend to act on it, police said. Police searched the student’s belongings and home in the 2900 block of Hillsboro Lane in Lake in the Hills and did not find anything dangerous.

Residents were asked to evacuate the area as a precautionary measure, police said.

Area resident Kendra DeMay said police arrived about 2:15 p.m. at her home on Hillsboro Lane to advise her to leave the area because of a bomb threat. DeMay said police advised her that it may take a couple of hours before she could return to her home.

A Nixle alert sent at 2:52 p.m. advised residents of police activity near Albrecht Road and Hillsboro Lane.

Huntley School District 158 rerouted several buses as a result of the investigation, according to an alert the district posted to Twitter on Thursday evening.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad and other area departments were called to assist. The scene and area roads reopened about 4 p.m. Thursday, according to a second Nixle alert from Lake in the Hills police.

Police agencies that responded included Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Carpentersville, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police.

When asked whether the 15-year-old will be charged, Huntley Deputy Chief Mike Klunk said via email that police are “still reviewing the incident for appropriate action and will consult with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.”
