Woodstock School District 200’s Greenwood Elementary School will have a new principal this year, according to a news release from the district.

Julie Smith will begin her first year with the district this year. She was most recently employed as assistant principal at Spaulding School in Gurnee School District 56 and previously worked as a behavior specialist and fourth grade teacher for 13 years, according to the district.

“I have a lot of experience in the classroom, and what I value, and where my career has taken me, is teaching,” said Smith in a statement. “I am a teacher at heart. In schools, it is our job to teach children, in every situation.”

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Illinois University, a master’s in instruction and leadership from St. Xavier University and a master’s in principal preparation from Concordia University.

Smith said she is excited to meet Greenwood families and staff and appreciates the “small-town feel” of the school.

“Everyone has been so welcoming,” she said. “It’s a really nice community.”

Smith said she currently is learning about the district, community and students and will soon begin to assess how academic needs are being met.

“I am big on individualizing learning,” Smith said. “No two kids learn the same way.”

Superintendent Mike Moan said he believes Smith will be a good fit for the school and he is excited about the level of experience she brings to the role. Smith will earn $92,000 annually.

Smith will replace Tom Wollpert, who is leaving to facilitate the district’s new Challenger Learning Center for Science and Technology.

The district acquired Challenger from Aurora University earlier this year. The program will be housed at Olson Elementary School, 720 W. Judd St., by September, according to the district.

Greenwood Elementary is located at 4618 Greenwood Road. About 300 students are enrolled. Most students are in grades one through five, but the school also houses preschool and kindergarten students with special needs, according to the district.
