The victim of a fatal Sunday evening crash in Harvard has been identified as a 29-year-old Niles man, who was the passenger in a vehicle that struck a tree, police say.
The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man also from Niles, was flown to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford with serious injuries, according to a news release the McHenry County Sheriff's Department sent Monday.
The McHenry County Coroner's Office has declined to provide information about the crash. A coroner's office employee referred all questions to the sheriff's office, which has not released either man's identity.
When officers arrived, they discovered a 2015 Mercedes-Benz had crashed into two trees on Oak Grove Road west of Route 14. A preliminary investigation determined that the Mercedes-Benz was traveling eastbound on Oak Grove Road when it crossed over the westbound lane left the roadway to the north, where it struck two trees and rolled onto its side, according to the release. Police did not know Monday why the vehicle veered off the road, but do not believe alcohol was a factor, according to the release.
Airbags deployed in the vehicle and the passenger was declared dead at the scene.
