Letter: Health care

To the Editor:

Our political leaders say that the U.S. is the greatest nation, and I certainly would not disagree. So why then is the cost of health care in the U.S. almost double the cost of health care of all other industrialized countries? Do we live longer and are we healthier as a result of spending more on health care?

Another area where the U.S. lags behind many other countries is in academic achievement. The scores of U.S.15-year-olds tested against students from other countries in science, math, and reading was significantly lower than the scores of students from these other countries. Students from Asian rim countries did much better than the U.S. students.

The question then becomes why do U.S. students lag behind in academic achievement? Something seems to be seriously wrong with public education in the U.S and there appears to be little interest in doing anything about it.
