LAKEWOOD – Crystal Lake South’s Will Stewart didn’t know the team scores as he stepped up and buried about a 1-foot putt on the 18th hole Monday at RedTail Golf Club. Sometimes it’s best not to know.
The birdie from its last golfer on the course gave South a one-stroke victory over Prairie Ridge in the Class 2A Crystal Lake South Regional.
The Gators, with a 305 team score, edged Prairie Ridge (306) and third-place Boylan (308).
“We were trying to work [the math] as everybody was coming in, and that was exciting,” South coach Curt Wadlington said. “It’s always fun when you know it’s really tight and don’t know [the score]. Honestly, we didn’t have any idea whether we’d won or not. That was fun.”
South’s John Lishchynsky won medalist honors, shooting a 1-under-par 71. Stewart tied for fourth overall with a 3-over 75. South’s Tanner Coakley (79) and Ethan Wiggs (80) also scored for the Gators.
For Lishchynsky, it marked his second individual regional title after winning one two years ago as a sophomore.
“It feels good to end senior year with another one,” Lishchynsky said. “I was just keeping the ball in play. From there, I had a lot of short shots putting me to the green and a lot of two-putts.”
South won the Fox Valley Conference title last week, beating Prairie Ridge by 21 shots. The Wolves’ 306 was their best team score of the season.
Grant Klepitsch’s 1-over 73 was enough for second place overall behind Lishchynsky.
“It gives us confidence to the next stage,” Klepitsch said. “Shooting 306 as a team is really good, and that can definitely help us as a team get down [to state]. It’s a good result.”
Klepitsch felt his putting was working Monday. Connor Hamilton (75), Eddie Winkelmann (79) and Bailey Lazar (79) also scored for the Wolves.
“It was a complete team effort,” Prairie Ridge coach John Powell said. “To be able to not count scores in the 80s, for our team this year, that’s really good for us. They were excited for each other.”
South was a Class 2A state qualifier last year but did not win its regional. The Gators lost to Boylan by five strokes at regionals in 2018. South won a regional in 2017, so Monday’s win marks two out of the past three years.
Wadlington called it “a little redemption.” A regional title was on their list of goals this season, but it’s far from the only one.
“It was one of our goals at the beginning of the year,” Stewart said. “We wanted to win conference, win a regional, win a sectional and win state. So we’re two-fourths of the way there.”
All advancing golfers will compete at Monday’s Class 2A Burlington Central Sectional at Whisper Creek in Huntley.
Marian Central, which finished fourth as a team with a 337, advanced four golfers individually. Brogan Pivnicka (80), Bennett Arza (83), Alex Gilmore (87) and Dylan Yegge (87) all advanced to the sectional. Marengo’s Brady Cannon (85) and Tyler Nelsen (87) also advanced, as did Richmond-Burton’s Connor L’Esperance (86).
STAR OF THE MEET

Lishchynsky shot a 1-under-par 71 to win medalist honors at the IHSA Class 2A Crystal Lake South Regional. The Gators won the regional title by one stroke over FVC rival Prairie Ridge.
3: The top three teams in the regional were separated by three shots. South (305) edged Prairie Ridge (306) and Boylan (308).
AND ANOTHER THING …
Prairie Ridge, in finishing second, beat its season low score by 11 strokes, coach John Powell said. “They came in and played with confidence, they really did,” he said. “They had a lot of fun out on the golf course. Every time I talked to them, they were feeling good.”
