High school sports roundup for Monday, Oct. 14

Crystal Lake Central co-op senior Molly Lyne will finish her high school career in an appropriate spot, competing in the Class 2A Girls Golf State Tournament.

Lyne and Huntley’s Katie Matustik tied for fifth Monday in the Prospect Sectional at Mount Prospect Golf Club. Both girls shot 78. Jacobs’ Roslyn Leitner shot 79 for one of the last two qualifying spots.

Those three will play Friday and Saturday at the Class 2A State Tournament at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

Lyne finished third as a freshman, 12th as a sophomore and 15th as a junior. She was selected as the Northwest Herald Girls Golfer of the Year the past two seasons.

Huntley (351) finished ninth as a team. Central, which has golfers from Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake Central and Crystal Lake South, took 11th at 379.

Lyne, who attends C-G, is committed to Louisville to play next year.

Matustik, a senior, was the Fox Valley Conference runner-up and led the Red Raiders to the team title this month.

Central’s Renata Petersen shot 85, while McHenry’s Sarah Fergus and Jacobs’ Lauren Kempf each shot 87 for the area’s next-best rounds.

Oregon Class 1A Sectional: At Silver Ridge in Oregon, Johnsburg’s Ellie Johnson shot 82 and Marian Central’s Lauren McNulty had an 85 to qualify for the Class 1A State Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Red Tail Run in Decatur.

Johnson finished in sixth place. McNulty tied for the final qualifying spot among individuals not advancing with their teams.

Johnson is making a return trip to state. The Skyhawks shot 402 as a team to take eighth place.

BOYS SOCCER

Woodstock 5, Harvard 0: At Woodstock, the Blue Streaks finished their Kishwaukee River Conference season unbeaten and unscored upon with a win over the Hornets (8-10-1, 6-4 KRC).

Woodstock (16-5, 10-0) scored 43 goals while allowing none in its 10 KRC games.

Denis Gjoni scored twice for the Streaks, while Mateo Alcazar, Mac Buckley and Angel Meraz also had goals. Oscar Escorza assisted on three goals. Buckley made a steal and scored his goal; Meraz scored off a rebound after a goalkeeper save.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Amboy Invitational: At Amboy, Johnsburg’s Andrew Ardon finished 46th in the 26-team meet in 16:51.5 to lead the Skyhawks to 13th as a team with 369 points.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Amboy Invitational: At Amboy, Johnsburg’s Sami Schmitt took 47th place in 20:24.3 as the Skyhawks finished 12th as a team with 370 points in the 25-team meet.
