MoMCon aims to bring moms together for self-care

The moms of McHenry County meet for MoMCon 2018.

Members of Moms of McHenry County want to empower moms everywhere by devoting a day solely to them.

Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the McHenry County Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake, MoMCon will include food, fun and a day’s worth of speakers. They’ll talk about ways to reduce stress and stay healthy.

“We don’t really have a general theme – expect just a whole day devoted to moms,” said Christy Johanson of Woodstock, a co-organizer of the event, along with Holly Magdalin of West Dundee and Emily Kunash of Woodstock.

“Everybody is told to practice self-care, but when do we really have time to do it? We’re hoping this event is that time.”

Registration costs $20 and is required. For information, visit mchenrymother.org. The event includes complimentary bagels, doughnuts and coffee, as well as lunch.

Along with keynote speakers and a variety of break-out sessions to choose from, the event will feature a self-care activity and vendor fair.

Among the keynote speakers, Molly Hillig Rodriguz will present “Little Big Lies, debunking beliefs we have been holding on to and keeping ourselves stuck,” while Katie Brown will present “A Little Bit of Grit and a Lot of Grace.”

Breakout sessions will include information on “Mom Styles” – a twist on management styles for mom – nutrition, “Cutting the Chaos” and finding time to exercise with children.

In its second year, the event grew out of the nonprofit Moms of McHenry County’s mission to support and encourage moms through every stage of motherhood, Johanson said.

Reaching more than 400 members through its Facebook page at facebook.com/momsofmchenryounty, Moms of McHenry County has about 50 active members who help plan monthly events, as well as volunteer activities with area nonprofit groups.

“One of the great things about our group is you can’t really age out of it,” said Johanson, a mom of three who joined about nine years ago as a way to meet other moms.

“It was a pretty big lifeline for me,” she said. “It’s a nice lifeline for all moms that just need to get out either with their kids or without their kids.”

Funded by an annual KidsStuff Resale hosted annually by Moms of McHenry County, MoMCon helps moms “just focus on themselves for a day,” she said.

“We’re hoping this event is a time to just practice self-care,” she said.
