More than 20 years after an iconic Illinois department store’s name fell into the annals of history, a McHenry County College professor plans to discuss the much-loved Marshall Field & Company.

MCC history and business professor Sarah Sullivan will provide a nostalgic experience by discussing the historic flagship building, on State Street in Chicago, and its intricate architecture, as well as discuss the activities of those who visited the store. Sullivan plans to explain how Marshall Field & Company defined the department store as we know it.

“Marshall Field’s is a piece of history that is interwoven with the memories and traditions of so many families in the area, especially at this time of year,” Sullivan said.

It was in 2006 that Marshall Field’s stores were renamed to Macy’s after the department store chain’s owner, May Department Stores Company, was acquired in 2005 by Federated Department Stores, which owned Macy’s.

Sullivan’s discussion is the second presentation in a new speaker series offered by MCC, called Experts and Insights.

The Marshall Field’s session begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Luecht Auditorium at MCC, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. Light refreshments and appetizers will be provided, beginning at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For information, go to www.mchenry.edu/experts. This series is supported by the Friends of MCC Foundation.
