The Binny's slated to replace Barnes and Noble in Crystal Lake on 5380 Route 14 is expected to open within the next 30 days.

The Binny’s moving into the former Barnes and Noble’s building in Crystal Lake is expected to open within the next 30 days, the city’s economic development manager said.

Heather Maieritsch, economic development manager, said the plan is for the liquor store to open shortly, and the city has been doing everything it can to expedite its opening.

Right now, Binny’s is gearing up to stock the shelves and put product in its new location, she said. In January, the Crystal Lake City Council unanimously voted to provide the establishment a liquor license when it opens.

“They’re definitely in the homestretch,” Maieritsch said.

The Barnes and Noble, formerly at the site on 5380 Route 14, officially closed on Aug. 10, to the dismay of some residents.

Maieritsch said the city is excited that it was able to “backfill” the space and avoid having it be vacant for too long.

“We never want a space to sit vacant for very long, especially one that has such high visibility along Northwest Highway,” Maieritsch said. “It’s always great if we can backfill it with another sales-generating business.”

Maieritsch pointed out that that area of the city will have a lot of new development and new business, especially as there will be a McAllister’s Deli and Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers opening next to it.

“I think that will add a lot of excitement and interest,” Maieritsch said. “It will generate additional traffic to the Crystal Lake area.”

Two Binny’s locations already exist in McHenry County: one in the city of McHenry, 4610 W. Elm St., and one in the village of Algonquin, 844 S. Randall Road.

As for the now-closed Barnes and Noble’s, Maieritsch said the city is continuing to work with the company to find a new site in Crystal Lake.
