To the Editor:
In the Jan. 3 “It’s Your Write” section, a writer claimed that the Democrats want the U.S. Senate to “use their impeachment playbook.”
The Democrats want acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Mulvaney's senior adviser Robert Blair, former National Security Adviser John Bolton and Office of Management and Budget staffer Michael Duffey to testify as part of a Senate trial.
Four fact witnesses to the Ukraine shakedown by Donald Trump. House GOP kept complaining that “hearsay witnesses” were all that were heard in the House impeachment hearing; even though they knew Trump had blocked the four people the Democrats want to testify in the Senate trial.
The writer went on that Dems want to “hide witnesses in the basement and air only the opinions they agree with.” The GOP House members were present when these witnesses testified in private before they testified in public. Even Rep. Trey Gowdy agreed that Democrats should have held private impeachment hearings for testimony, the same way the GOP did with Hillary Clinton and the Benghazi investigation.
The writer closed by saying she was “more than a little angry about all the time and taxpayer money they have wasted the past three years.” The Democrats took control of the House in January 2019. They have also passed over 400 bills, which Mitch McConnell has let gather dust in the Senate.
Real facts matter in the era of Trump and the “alternative facts” world of his supporters.
