Letter: Ignore critics – McHenry Township Road District is a good value

To the Editor:

The McHenry Township Road District provides high-quality service to all of its residents.

This is a response to Bob Anderson’s letter to the Northwest Herald posted Jan. 28. Yes, the road district has millions of dollars’ worth of facilities and equipment that cost me less than $90 a year on my tax bill.

It is clear to me that the highway commissioners have done an excellent job budgeting the district assets over the past few decades. The $90 I pay is only 2.55% of my total tax bill. I have plowed municipal and state roads over the past 12 years, and I commend the road district for an exceptional job every year, not only for snowplowing and ice control, but also for road quality, right-of-way stormwater drainage and tree pruning.

Anderson failed to inform residents that the average tax bill to the road district is about $90 a year, and a portion is given to the municipality they live in. The rest of the road district tax bill is applied to the main artery roads in the township that provide residents passage to work, hospitals, doctors’ offices, shopping, family and friends. For those residents who do not frequently travel township roads, please keep in mind that first responders from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, local police, emergency medical services and fire districts use these roads to travel to our homes and businesses during emergencies.

Anderson is a McHenry Township Board member who should try living within his means instead of attempting to abolish the township that provides valuable services to its residents.

Anderson mentioned nepotism in his letter. The only nepotism I’ve seen is when Anderson and fellow Trustee Mike Rakestraw appointed Steve Verr behind closed doors to a seat on the township board. If the residents of McHenry Township wanted Verr to represent them, they would have voted him in when he ran in the last election for township officials.
