It’s time again for school supplies, schedules, homework, extracurricular activities and parent teacher conferences.  While always exciting, it can also be daunting for the divorcing or recently divorced family, but your children will appreciate it if you show unity and continuity of family.

Each parent should contact the school to be listed as contacts. Both should participate in registration and attend orientation so they know what teachers expect.

Be consistent with bedtimes, routines, chores, exercise, healthy eating and homework across both parents’ homes so children are out of conflict.  United parenting is important to your children’s focus on school work and healthy habits.  While dinner and pool at a local restaurant sounds fun, it can disrupt homework and sleep habits.

Get children to practices, games and other extracurricular activities on time.  Cheer them on and attend all you can, knowing that kids grow up fast.

Confirm who the kids’ doctors and dentist are, and make sure prescriptions are up-to-date and the regimen is being followed in both homes.

Provide a quiet and inviting space for study and reading for fun.

Don’t rely on the other parent to police electronics use. Encourage quality time with your children besides a device. Ask them who they are messaging, what they’re talking about and what pictures are being shared to start conversations and stay informed.

Get to know their friends and invite them to dinners, trips, or just to hang out.  Make your place is a good place where the kids want to be.

If you’re having trouble communicating, sign on to Our Family Wizard at ourfamilywizard.com.   This site provides families an efficient way to manage communications and details with little likelihood of conflict.  If there is conflict, the court will likely be able to see the communications and quickly tell where the trouble is.  Keep your children out of the channel of communications by using this easy tool.
