It’s been 10 years since McHenry County College first introduced its Green Living Expo, a unique event where the community can explore the latest in sustainable living, get energy-saving ideas, shop for green gifts, and take in fun, educational exhibits.
The event has grown tremendously in that time, and this year on Nov. 4, more than 70 local businesses and organizations will offer green products and services. Visitors will also find interactive displays, two fully furnished tiny houses, bicycle demos, and giveaways.
“We like to change things up a little every year, and it’s been nice to help the green-living economy and help these businesses grow as much as they can,” said Kim Hankins, director of sustainability for McHenry County College. “People come because they’re intrigued by one thing or another and then they walk around and learn so much.”
“One of our new additions this year is an Artists Walk that will feature unique environmentally themed art and jewelry for sale,” Hankins said. “And to celebrate our 10th anniversary we have a special award-winning exhibit, Sustainable Choices” The exhibit, which opens to the public Nov. 4 and will be on campus for several weeks, is a series of kiosks explaining choices people can make in their everyday lives.
Attendees can also view area college/university solar and super mileage team race cars and meet the team members. And for those who have devised or discovered energy-saving inventions, the Living Lightly Tent offers a place to share ideas with others.
As an environmentally responsible bonus, visitors may also bring their defunct jack-o-lanterns, straw and other biodegradable Halloween items to the fall decor/pumpkin composting site at the expo.
