Woodstock native Jill Flores and her mother, Laurie Freund-Dina, encourage women to get their annual mammogram screenings. Their mammograms at Centegra Gavers Breast Center saved their lives.
At age 41, Flores had her second-ever mammogram screening, revealing a lump in her left breast. Six months later, Freund-Dina’s mammogram showed the same sized cancerous lump in the same breast in the same location.
“When Jill learned about her diagnosis I tried to be the mom and stay strong and not get all upset, but secretly, I was … very upset,” Freund-Dina said.
“It turned out my diagnosis and treatment was a dress rehearsal for my mom,” Flores said. “And we were confident she was going to be just fine.”
Both had the same treatments including breast-conserving surgery. Dr. Gia Compagnoni was Flores’ surgeon, and Freund-Dina’s surgeon was Dr. Daniel Farrugia. Both surgeons performed breast-conserving surgery.
“I never felt like I was a number with any of the doctors or anyone who treated me,” Flores said. “I was never made to feel like I asked silly questions. They took the time to assure me that I was making the right decisions along the way.”
“I feel that Centegra supported me right from the very beginning, with everybody involved. The aides, the nurses ... everybody,” Freund-Dina said. “All were very caring and very personable and giving of their time. It was nice to be close to home.”
For women like Flores and Freund-Dina who have had a previous finding, Centegra Gavers Breast Center offers mammogram results on-site.
“What I love about having mammograms at Centegra Gavers Breast Center is that a radiologist is on-site to read your pictures and give your results immediately, so there is no dreadful wait,” Flores said.
“I would suggest that everybody get in for their annual mammogram,” Freund-Dina said. “I can’t push that enough.”
