Car window won’t roll up? What to do

SPONSORED

What do you do when your car window won’t roll up?

With the snow, cold and winds of winter setting in, it pays to be prepared if you push that button and nothing happens, especially if you’re on your way to work, don’t have a garage or have to park in the street, and you can’t get to a mechanic right away.

Chances are your window’s motor will have to be replaced, but until then there are tricks you can use to get it closed.

Some of the motor’s contacts are likely worn out, but because there are many, you may be able to push the switch until it hits one of the good contacts to raise up the glass. If that doesn’t work, you can try turning on the car, pushing the window switch as if you’re closing the window and slamming the door shut so that it hopefully, connects to one of those good contacts. If you’re successful, just don’t open the window again before you get it to the shop.

If that fails, push the switch to attempt to close the window and pound on the door panel a few times (just not hard enough to break anything.) If THAT fails, try flicking the switch up and down while pounding on the door panel several times (again, not too hard.)

If you have windows that open all the way without having to hold down the switch, it could be a problem with the sensor. Wait about a minute for it to reset and try again. If it stops before it closes, wait and try again. You should be able to open and close the window again IF you don’t let it lower all the way. That will give you a little more time before you can get your mechanic to look at it.
