McHenry County College Expands Personal Development Class Opportunities

SPONSORED

Beat the winter blahs by learning a new skill or hobby or taking a class with friends just for fun. Area residents can choose from a wide variety of noncredit personal development classes offered through the Continuing Education Department at McHenry County College.

Explore art and photography, speak a foreign language, increase your financial knowledge, experiment with stained/leaded glass, or get fit with strength training classes. Also, through a partnership between MCC’s credit programs and noncredit programs, students in select personal development classes have the opportunity to sit alongside credit students, but don’t have to take tests or get graded. These classes are affordable, convenient and taught by expert instructors.

For example, noncredit students can enroll in Basic Floral Design, Fruit & Vegetable Crops, and music classes (chorus, concert band, jazz ensemble and Dixieland Band).

“These partnerships are a win-win for everybody,” said Dori Sullens, director of Continuing Education. “It gives students an opportunity to take classes for personal interest that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.”

For Debbie Walters-Kaske of Carpentersville, a recent horticulture night class appealed to her because she works full time and this partnership provided her an opportunity to delve into a topic she’s passionate about.

“I felt the Plant Problem Diagnosis series of classes as a non-credit student would enhance my volunteer experience as a Master Gardener. It was a very rewarding experience and I feel I had the best of both worlds. By choice, I did all the homework and took the final. I like the idea of the credit/noncredit offering because it provides people a way to get more experience and in-depth knowledge in a subject they have a passion for. I also feel it is a good way to explore an interest or possible career change.”
