Area College Students Get Ahead with Summer Classes at Community Colleges

While many college students take the summer off from studying, it’s actually a perfect time to catch up on some classes locally and transfer the credits back to their schools in the fall.

Summer classes are a great option if you failed a class or were unable to get into a class you wanted, said Kellie Carper, manager of Student Transitions at McHenry County College. The credits will transfer to your school, and classes at MCC are usually significantly less expensive than at four-year colleges and universities. It’s often less stressful to take one or two summer classes, too, Carper said.

“We have a variety of courses,” Carper said, noting that students can pick up credits in English comp, math, foreign language, or, in some cases, intro courses for your major. Classes typically start in mid-May and finish by the first week of August, with staggered starts so there is flexibility.

“A lot of universities don’t have summer housing, so the opportunity to take a summer class is challenging if you don’t live right next to your school,” Carper said.

Registration for summer classes at MCC begins March 19 online, by phone, and in person. “A lot of students come home during spring break and they’ll stop in to campus and get their summer schedule figured out and set up,” Carper said.

Summer-only students are encouraged to check in with an academic advisor at their home institution to make sure they’re enrolling in courses that they need. “Once they’ve talked with their advisor at their home institution, our advisors can help them with a specific course selection,” Carper said.

To register for summer classes, call the MCC Admissions and Recruitment Office at 815-479-7732. Summer-only students can apply and find an information checklist at mchenry.edu/admissions/summer.asp.
