5 things to know about respite care

SPONSORED

Respite care provides short-term relief for primary care givers.

Care can be provided at home, in a healthcare facility or at an adult day center for just an afternoon or for several days or weeks.

Here are 5 things you should know about respite care:

1. Paying for care

Respite services charge by the hour or by the number of days or weeks that services are provided. Most insurance plans do not cover these costs. You must pay all costs not covered by insurance or other funding sources.

Medicare will cover most of the cost of up to 5 days in a row of respite care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility for a person receiving hospice care. Medicaid may also offer some assistance if you quality.

2. Types of care

In-home respite care is temporary care provided in the person’s home. Local senior services agencies have a list of approved caregivers who provide in-home respite care.

Out-of-home respite care programs offer the opportunity for the family or caregivers to leave the person needing care at a facility such as an assisted living center.

3. Create a plan

Create a respite plan. Know your needs as well as the needs of your loved one. Are you looking for three hours off, twice a week or 24 hours away from the house? Does your loved one need companionship, therapy or aid with skills while you are away?

4. Find support

Every caregiver needs a caregiver so you can take care of yourself.

The Family Caregiver Alliance has a family care navigator tool to help you locate resources, including support groups near you, and also gives you the ability to join an online caregiver group.

5. Know your options

There are many in home care agencies or referral services that can connect you with the perfect caregiver.

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) can connect you with visiting companions, hourly in-home respite care, adult day care and overnight respite providers.
