Looking for a simple way to give your living room an instant makeover? Consider swapping out your dated throw pillows for a new set.
“Some people find they are stuck in their color palette from the 1990s or early 2000s and want to know how they can quickly change up the decor,” said Mary Meyn, of the Crystal Lake-based Yours & Meyn, Simply Designed.
Accent pillows are an easy way to do just that.
“With an earth-toned colored sofa, for example, it’s very easy to throw in your teals and blues or pull in the grays and camels and golds,” Meyn said.
Pillows can also be an easy way to update a room for the season.
“When you have gray tones, a lot of people will pull in mustardy yellows or throw in a pop of orange going into fall,” said Meyn. “During the winter holidays, you can add a shimmery or sequin pillow to your palette.”
And while a new set of designer pillows might mean paying a little more, higher quality is worth the splurge.
“Sometimes investing in a set of pillows is less expensive than investing in a brand new sofa when you want to give a fresh update to your room,” Meyn said.
To that end, keep in mind that when making your purchase you get what you pay for.
“There’s more to a pillow than meets the eye, starting with the inside out,” said Meyn.
For instance, when it comes to filling, it’s best to avoid polyester inserts which tend to break down over time. Instead, opt for feather and down inserts.
“You’ll be adding some costs but that insert has a much longer lifespan than polyfill,” Meyn said.
If the color palette in your space needs a boost, new throw pillows can be a small way to make a big impact.
