What does soda pop do to my teeth?

Want to give your dentist something to smile about? Opt for water over carbonated beverages such as soda.

For many this can be a hard habit to break. But consuming large amounts of soda can contribute to decay and cavity formation.

That’s because most soft drinks contain large amounts of sugar which then interacts with the bacteria in your mouth to form acid. The latter can break down tooth enamel, leaving smiles vulnerable to cavities. Soda, both regular and diet, also contain their own acids which can wreak havoc on teeth as regular loss of enamel due to erosion can also lead to tooth pain or sensitivity.

Dr. Tim Stirneman of the Lake in the Hills-based Compassionate Dental Care said there are steps you can take to lessen the damage.

If you do plan to indulge in a soda, make sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward, which can help to remove some of the leftover sugar and acids. It’s also a good idea to limit the amount of soda you consume each day to just one. And avoid drinking soft drinks right before you go to bed, as the sugar and acid will have all night to sit on your teeth. When you are drinking soda, use a straw to keep sugar and acids away from the teeth.

Most importantly, make sure to schedule regular appointments with Compassionate Dental Care.

From preventive checkups and cleanings to screening for oral cancer and placing dental sealants, visiting the Compassionate Dental Care office at least twice a year gives the team the opportunity to partner with patients in keeping their smiles whole and healthy.
