Shake off the Winter Blues with Health and Fitness Classes

SPONSORED

Remember that New Year’s resolution? If you’ve lost some enthusiasm for your good intentions (hey, it happens), maybe all you need is a little encouragement and support. Taking a class can provide just that, plus it gets you out of the house when the couch is calling.

McHenry County College is offering everything from open basketball on Sundays to certification in bicycle maintenance starting in March, so you’d be hard pressed NOT to find something that piques your interest.

Looking to move your body more? Consider MCC’s Running 101 class, which includes a video analysis of your stride, progressive running technique drills, and how to use strength and flexibility exercises to run farther and faster. They’ll also cover how to choose the perfect shoe.

Golf lessons, yoga, Tai Chi, or a $39 trial membership in the college fitness center also offer more ways to move your body in a fun, interactive environment.

If you’re itching to garden, you can soothe your green thumb ‘til the ground thaws in a hydroponics class and learn how to grow your own food—without soil—from seed to harvest. Related community classes include growing fruit and vegetable crops, mushroom growing, beekeeping, and raising backyard chickens.

On the mental health side, you can engage your brain with a decluttering class, foreign languages, music lessons, or more art classes than you can shake a brush at. And while drawing and painting are on the schedule, there’s also fused glass, jewelry making, welding classes for yard art and other forms of sculpture, and reclaimed wood painting.

Still not convinced? Check out the schedule yourself online at www.mchenry.edu/community and see what else inspires you. Classes range from one-day workshops to several weeks in length, and cost as little as $19 for McHenry County residents.
