Following recent changes in guidelines for new play developmental workshops set down by the Actors’ Equity Association, Raue Center for the Arts’ WSRepertory has chosen to rebrand its Reading Series.
Actor, director and WSRep Ensemble Member, Michele Vazquez, will be at the helm of WSRep’s newly rebranded series as the program manager. Vazquez, who directed the world premiere of Deborah Yarchun’s “Bomber’s Moon” for WSRep last fall, is excited about the change. “The main focus of this series has always been audience development,” says Vazquez. “We want to share a more immediate and intimate look at how actors and directors approach work on the page with our patrons,” she continues. “No sets. No lights. Nothing to distract from the script. It's also an opportunity for playwrights to hear their work – maybe for the first time – so they can prepare for the next step of their process.”
WSRep’s Reading Series is dedicated to showcasing new scripts and fostering new talent while also sharing the artist’s perspective of the play on-the-page with the audience. The goal of the series is to offer the local community a free public forum which brings audiences and theatre artists together to share and discuss a wide range of exciting work. Each reading is followed by a talkback and discussion.
"We’re really excited to launch next year's initiative under Michele's guidance,” says Artistic Director Richard Kuranda. “‘Bomber’s Moon’ was a huge success and nothing would please us more than to help usher more new works onto the stage. After several years of grappling with issues like retiring old debt and securing new facilities, it is a pleasure to focus on the work.”
